Writing a thesis is the most difficult task for students. There is a great element of fear in students about the thesis. The thesis is submitted at the end of degree and it is the most crucial thing in earning a degree. Without a thesis, you cannot get your degree. Students have to devote a considerable amount of time in designing, developing and presenting a thesis. Procedures of every thesis vary from program to program. A student must aware where and when he should start working for the thesis.
Where and how to begin?
Graduate faculty members have a specific area of interest and expertise. Students chose to enter the program of their own interest and work with the supervisor who is expert in those areas. Thus the area of your interest will be the area of interest of your supervisor.
You should start to work on a thesis in the final semester so that you should have enough time to work on it.
- The first step in starting a research is topic selection. Brainstorm ideas with your research supervisor; ask him to identify few topics for you. Choose the topic which is workable. Do not go for those topics that are too difficult to do and which take lots of time.
- Once you are done with topic selection, the next step is proposal preparation. It is most significant part of the research because if your proposal gets accepted means you can start with your research. For proposal, you have to do intensive research.
- If your proposal gets accepted the next step is conducting research. Every research has a specific format. You have to start with literature review. Start with reading the articles that had been published in similar areas. Try to find out the research gap. That research gap will be your thesis statement or research hypothesis. Your research is based on your hypothesis. After a literature review, you have to conduct the methodology section of research. There are different methods for doing methodology. Every program and discipline has different procedures. Do select the procedure which best suits your program’s requirements. In methodology section, you come up with the results and findings of the research. At the end, you conclude your research with recommendations for future researchers. You leave research questions for future researchers in your recommendations so that further research can be carried out
- When you are done with your research, next step is to start with writing. There is always a specific format for research; you should strictly follow that format.
- When you are done with writing proofread your document and ask your supervisor for proofreading. After proofreading and necessary changes, your thesis is ready to submit.
It is important that you should start your research early so that you can have enough time for revisions and fixing mistakes. It is always good to do a pilot test before submitting your thesis. The pilot test will help you to analyze whether you can ahead with the thesis or there is still room for improvement. Always start thesis on time so that you can submit it in time.
